The needs of each company vary from case to case, this being valid even when we bring up Web hosting solutions, which is why it is important to inform ourselves before making a purchase, so that the choice made is as accurate as possible.
Large projects that require processing power or extensive storage space will generally have two solutions available: Dedicated Servers or Virtual Private Servers (VPS).

Dedicated servers are represented by physical equipment in the form of a server that contains components such as: processor, motherboard, hard disk, IO controllers, memory, etc. In most cases, dedicated servers come with powerful resources meant to accommodate websites with high traffic or in some special situations, will be used only for running a single application.
However, the performance of the dedicated server also comes with some disadvantages, represented by: the high purchase and maintenance cost, physical portability, and last but not least the need for management knowledge, as most dedicated servers are offered without administration from the Web company. If these aspects can be overlooked, the dedicated server offers a robust and stable operating experience.

VPSs are essentially virtual servers (or virtual machines in some cases) that emulate the behavior and resources of a physical server. Unlike dedicated servers, where the ownership of the equipment is held by only one person/entity, VPSs share a physical equipment with multiple users, each of whom is isolated from one another. This isolation process is achieved through a virtualization software called a hypervisor, which manages the resources of the physical server to allocate them appropriately to each virtual machine.
For the vast majority of applications, the runtime and response times will be the same whether running on a dedicated or virtual server.
Taking this aspect into consideration along with the ones listed below, acquiring a VPS is in most cases recommended compared to acquiring a dedicated server.
The benefits of a VPS vs dedicated server:

  • More affordable prices through the even distribution of computing resources;
  • Provides a much simpler and easier setup and management of security;
  • Virtual machines have a much better, more reliable, and simpler disaster recovery process than a physical server;
  • Migration is easily done from one physical server to another or in virtual environments.
